TAROT CARD ARTIST CALL

ForNorthern CAartists
ar·ca·na
/ärˈkānə/
1. secrets or mysteries
* either of the two groups of cards in a tarot pack: the twenty-two trump cards (the major arcana) and the fifty-six suit cards (the minor arcana).
* plural noun: major arcana; plural noun: minor arcana
Spellbinding and richly illustrated, the Tarot is an archetypal series of images that has captivated the imagination of both seers and seekers across the ages. The exact origin of the Tarot is obscured in the mists of history and inextricably bound with its sister, the traditional deck of playing cards. Both arose in Europe in the Middle Ages, possibly derived from earlier systems brought by the peoples of Egypt, Arabia, or East India. In recent years, the Tarot has exploded in popularity, inspiring countless artists and authors to reinterpret its age old icons and adapt them for modern audiences. This exhibit aims to explore the common threads of symbolism and meaning in the Tarot, and to create a narrative series of the 22 Major Arcana images between artists.
Whether used for traditional “fortune telling” or as a contemporary tool of personal or spiritual development, the art of the Tarot weaves a tapestry of symbolism, mysticism, and inspiration that continues to enchant the human psyche centuries after its emergence in the middle ages.
