21 Grants $ For Artists, Writers and Photographers - Free Money

Artist Grant

Founded in 2017, Artist Grant is a new venture that aims to support and fund artists. To that end, this charitable organization funds the efforts of artists to continue their important work and contributions to society, providing a modest competitive grant of $500 to one artist every quarter.

  • WHO: Visual artists 18 and older from anywhere in the world

  • FIELD: Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, stills of video/film, sculpture (of any type of material), ceramics, mixed/multiple media, installation, and other new or alternative media.

  • AMOUNT: $500 each grant cycle

  • DEADLINE: There are four grant cycle deadlines per year – January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15.

  • FINE PRINT: There is an application fee of $25 USD that helps defray the costs of administering this grant so that they may continue to support and fund artists' important work.

2020 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship

NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships, awarded in fifteen different disciplines over a three-year period, are $7,000 cash awards made to individual originating artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use. These fellowships are not project grants but are intended to fund an artist’s vision or voice, regardless of the level of his or her artistic development. Applications for the 2021 award cycle are now open and will close on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 11:59 PM EST. The following categories will be reviewed:

  • Fiction, Folk/Traditional Arts, Interdisciplinary Work, Painting, Video/Film

  • WHO: Artists living and working in New York, 25 years and older

  • AMOUNT: $7000

  • FINE PRINT: Application requirements: Artist Statement - up to 100 words, Work Statement - up to 100 words, Work Samples - up to 10 digital images with descriptions. 

The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant 

Supports writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The first program of its type. The Arts Writers Grant was founded in recognition of both the financially precarious situation of arts writers and their indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture.

Ranging from $15,000 to $50,000. Three categories—articles, books, and short-form writing. These grants support projects addressing both general and specialized art audiences, from short reviews for magazines and newspapers to in-depth scholarly studies. The program is administered by Creative Capital.

Creative Capital

Creative Capital supports adventurous artists across the country through funding, counsel, and career development services.  This impact-driven arts organization provides each funded project with up to $50,000 in funding and career development services valued at $50,000.

  • WHO: U.S. artists with at least five years of professional experience in any discipline working on a specific project.

  • FIELD: Painting, Sculpture, Works on Paper, Photography, Public Art, and more

  • AMOUNT: Up to $50,000 in direct funding

  • FINE PRINT: Besides funding, you’ll have access to consultations with legal, financial, marketing, public relations, and web consultants; artist retreats and regional gatherings; ten meetings with a strategic planning coach; and more. Letter of Inquiry must be submitted. 

Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant

The Virginia A. Groot Foundation established the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant in 1988 so that a ceramic sculpture or sculpture artist may have the opportunity to devote a substantial period of time to the development of his or her work. Each year the Virginia A. Groot Foundation offers three grants (up to $50,000, $20,000, $10,000) to artists who have exceptional talent and demonstrated ability in ceramic sculpture or sculpture. Artists may be at any stage of career development, from emerging through mature. 

  • WHO: Ceramic or sculpture artists

  • AMOUNT: $50,000, $20,000, or $10,000

  • FINE PRINT: Students enrolled in or attending, either full-time or part-time, any institution of higher learning are not eligible. Work completed as a student is not eligible.

The JGS Fellowship for Photography

$7,000 cash grant open to New York State photography artists living and working outside of New York City. The Fellowship will be awarded to five artists working in traditional and experimental photography or any form in which photographic techniques are pivotal. 

  • All past recipients of any NYFA grant or Fellowship are eligible to apply.

  • Applicants must work in photography.

  • Applicants can work in traditional and experimental photography or any form in which photography or photographic techniques are pivotal, if not exclusive.

Regional Arts & Culture Professional Development Grant

The Professional Development Grant Program supports artists, arts professionals, and arts organizations in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties with grants of up to $2,000 to support distinct opportunities that will advance their creative practice or business skill development.

The Professional Development Grant Program is focused on supporting opportunities that are distinct from the applicant’s previous experiences, timely, meaning the applicant is in a prime time in their career to benefit from the opportunity, and opportunities which will result in long term professional growth.


Artists' Fellowship, Inc.

The Artists’ Fellowship provides emergency aid to professional fine artists and their families in times of sickness, natural disaster, bereavement or unexpected extreme hardship.

  • WHO: U.S. artists

  • AMOUNT: TBD

  • DEADLINE: Meeting monthly from September to June, the Board of Trustees reviews all applications to determine if they have been properly submitted and if they are eligible.  Applicants are encouraged to submit early in the month. 

  • FINE PRINT: “Professional” is defined as those visual artists who make their livelihood through sales as reported on a Schedule C with a U.S. Federal tax return. An active exhibition history is also an important part of documenting “professional.” 

Artadia Awards - Chicago

Visual artists who have lived and worked within Cook County, IL for a minimum of two years. Individual artists and collaboratives working in all visual media and at any stage in their career are strongly encouraged to apply. Awardees will be selected through a two-tier jury process that employs a panel of prominent curators in the summer of 2020.

  • WHO: All visual artists living and working in the current award city of Chicago

  • AMOUNT: $10,000

  • FINE PRINT: Awards are based on merit. The award money can be used however the artist sees fit.

Artist Relief Emergency Grants:

To support artists during the COVID-19 crisis, a coalition of national arts grantmakers have come together to create an emergency initiative to offer financial and informational resources to artists across the United States. Artist Relief will distribute $5,000 grants to artists facing dire financial emergencies due to COVID-19; serve as an ongoing informational resource; and co-launch the COVID-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers, designed by Americans for the Arts, to better identify and address the needs of artists.

  • WHO: U.S. artists

  • AMOUNT: $5,000

  • FINE PRINT: Please note that the Artist Relief coalition partners will make final eligibility determinations as needed. The fund will fund at least 100 artists per week.

Betty Bowen Award

Administered by the Seattle Art Museum, the annual Betty Bowen Award honors a Northwest artist for their original, exceptional, and compelling work. The winner is awarded an unrestricted cash prize of $15,000, and a selection of his or her works is shown at the Seattle Art Museum in the spring. In addition, up to two Special Recognition Awards in the amount of $2,500 are often granted at the discretion of the Betty Bowen Committee.

  • WHO: U.S. artists in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho

  • AMOUNT: $15,000 or $2,500

  • FINE PRINT: Selection is based on, but not limited to, the following criteria: the compelling nature of the artist’s ideas and contribution to the field, the quality and creativity of the work submitted for review, the artist’s commitment to developing their work, the impact the award will have on the artist and his/her career. 

The Halstead Grant

The Halstead Grant is an annual award worth $7,500 for emerging silver jewelry artists to help jewelry entrepreneurs create a strategy to kick-start their careers.

  • WHO: Emerging silver jewelry artists

  • AMOUNT: $7,500

  • FINE PRINT: Applicants submit answers to 15 business questions in addition to their design portfolios. Download an application for eligibility requirements and complete details.

Innovate Grants

Innovate Grant awards two grants each quarter, to one visual artist and one photographer. In addition to receiving a grant award, winners will be featured and recognized on our website and join a growing community of vibrant and talented artists.

  • WHO: Visual artists and photographers worldwide

  • AMOUNT: $550

  • FINE PRINT: They believe your work should speak for itself and their grant application reflects that! All they require is name, email, grant category (Art or Photography), 3-5 images of your work, and an application fee of $25. 

Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant

In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the artist community, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts is creating a temporary fund to meet the needs of experimental artists who have been impacted by the economic fallout from postponed or canceled performances and exhibitions. For as long as our Board of Directors determines it is necessary and prudent to do so, the Foundation will disburse one-time $1,500 grants to artists who have had performances or exhibitions canceled or postponed because of the pandemic.

The Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant

Adolph Gottlieb, one of the artists known for initiating the Abstract Expressionism movement, achieved artistic and financial success far beyond his early expectations. But, he had several colleagues who, despite their artistic achievements, were not able to support themselves financially. The Gottlieb Foundation wishes to encourage artists who have dedicated their lives to developing their art, regardless of their level of commercial success.

  • WHO: Artists who have been working for at least 20 years in a mature phase of your work, and can demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

  • FIELD: Painting, printmaking, or sculpting

  • AMOUNT: $25,000 each to 12 artists

  • DEADLINE: December 15, 2020

  • FINE PRINT: Maturity is based on a high level of intellectual, technical, and creative proficiency that has been maintained over time. It is based less on an applicant’s age than on the development of and commitment to an artist’s work that has progressed over time.

Puffin Foundation Artist Grants

The Puffin Foundation Ltd. has sought to open the doors of artistic expression by providing grants to artists and art organizations who are often excluded from mainstream opportunities due to their race, gender, or social philosophy.

Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants - 4 x Grants and Awards

Enabling artists to create new work, purchase needed materials and pay for studio rent, as well as their personal expenses. Past recipients of Pollock-Krasner grants acknowledge their critical impact in allowing concentrated time for studio work, and in preparing for exhibitions and other professional opportunities such as accepting a residency.

Artists can apply to The Pollock-Krasner Foundation by submitting an online application. Requirements for consideration are the application form, a cover letter, a current resume including an exhibition record, and ten digital images of current work with a corresponding identification list. All applications will be promptly acknowledged and considered. Please do not send application forms by mail, fax or e-mail.
