'The Unseen World'

PAIDWORK FROM HOMENONUNION

Deadline: June 30, 2021 4:59 PM
Company: The Monkey House

Ira Marlowe, prod.-dir.; Alison Auth, co-prod.

Casting "The Unseen World," a radio play musical. Note: We are in production but have had to re-cast two key roles. At present, this is an audio-only version of a new musical. The show involves parallel dimensions, schizophrenia, and a mythical invention by Nikola Tesla--but also touches on racism and our unconscious assumptions about people and the world. The finished recording will be promoted to podcasts, public radio stations and theaters as a way of bringing this show to the stage. We've assembled an amazing cast of actors from NY and LA and are seeking more people on that same level as singers and voice actors.

Roles

Baritone villain(s) (Supporting): Male, 35-60WORK FROM HOMEWe're producing a radio play of "The Unseen World", a new musical involving parallel dimensions, schizophrenia, and the fate of our planet. This show has already won a contest, had a series of readings, and all involved are excited about its momentum. We are already in production with a fabulous cast and need to replace an actor who's become unavailable. This actor hired will play as many as three roles: Mr. Lee, a sadistic security guard with a chillingly flat affect, Rathbone, a pompous bureaucrat, and Rod a swaggering oaf who sees himself as god's gift to women. Lee and Rathbone have featured parts in ensemble songs, Rod has a song of his own. We need an actor who is committed, professional, and a strong baritone. Because this being recorded at home and via zoom, we can offer a fair amount flexibility with scheduling.Required Media: Headshot/PhotoRequired Skills:

  • Singing

Rehearsal and Production Dates & Locations

Already in production and actors have recorded their lines for most scenes. Note: For dialogue, new cast members will self-record, working with existing members. Actors record songs on their own, receiving notes as needed. This process is working very well and we are very excited about this.

'Roll On!' Virtual Reading

THEATER: MUSICALS

PAIDWORK FROM HOMEUNION AND NONUNION

EXPIRES:May 1, 2021 5:00 AM

Company Roll On! Productions

Craig Johnson, dir. of ops.

Production Description

Casting a virtual reading of "Roll On!," a gospel drama musical. Synopsis: An ensemble gospel play that tells the story of an aged black church, its search for new leadership, and its secrets buried deep within its walls…and its parishioners. Set primarily in the suburbs of Detroit, MI, the play spans a total of 25 years, requiring a cast that is able to convincingly play a broad range of ages.

Production states: "Roll On! is written by Marshall Opie, a native New Yorker based in the DMV, and will be directed by Alric Davis, a Howard University alumnus based out of Houston TX. While there are many references to the Gospel, Roll On! is not simply a religious play but a universal dramatic work with an exciting, eclectic, thumping, soulful musical score. Though within the ensemble there are clear leads, there are no “DIVAS” written in the play. Everyone’s individual performance is important. We are looking for a strong, experienced Broadway caliber cast that can SING, ACT, and “MOVE” on the stage, particularly qualified interested actors that could be potentially cast in a full Houston-based, live stage performance in 2022, being developed for a road-tour heading eastward to New York."

Roles

Collapse All RolesPearl Johnson (Principal Lead) (Lead): Female, 46-72WORK FROM HOMEPearl is a simple character yet complexed. Simple in the fact that she is a good wife and mother, as well as, a working class, Christian woman – a woman of strong faith. Her faith overshadows her fears, gives her a confidence that won’t allow her to backdown when she confronts injustice, and shields her inadequacies, personal desires, and secrets hidden within her heart. Her secrets – though simple and common in human nature, make her complexed as she hides her hurts, shame, and private conversations she dares to hold only with herself and God: secrets hidden in her heart that she has committed to take with her to her grave. Her work and raising of her children keep her preoccupied from the things that she has deceitfully convinced herself that she must hide. Her simplicity can be found in her likes and loves: family, people, church, good food, and good music. Though she has extroverted qualities, she is most comfortable being all by herself, standing - barefoot - cooking in a big, beautiful kitchen, which makes her powerful, a dreamer, simple, a woman with sex appeal, and not necessarily so complexed.

A physically strong and mentally strong-willed working-class man, husband and father who is often blinded by his lack of ability or desire to multi-task or to think outside of his own, self-made box. At times he appears to be far more religious than spiritual. His single-minded nature makes him unfit and sadly incapable of analyzing his own self-proclaimed, prophetic dreams. His strong-willed nature cripples him from achieving the sincere, good intentions of his heart.

He is pastor and founder of the church that the play is centered. He uses a cane as result of
a stroke. He had the stroke prior to the passing of his wife. He deems his stroke as a merciful reminder of God’s judgment and a consequence for the sins of his youth. As a widower, he strives to laugh more, reverence life, and make peace with his cane, his parishioners, and his beloved friends. A simple wink from his eye tells many stories and reveals his true, kindhearted nature. He is a man who has learned the difference between sympathy and empathy. He can be touched by the infirmities of others; but he governs himself and the church that he oversees by its Holy Bible, bi-laws, and constitution.

A Ph.D., progressive minded, youthful hearted minister that is in search of a church in need of a pastor. He seems himself as a change maker, an activist, and a man called by God to serve. His greatest fear is his past and the anger in his heart that is caused by it. His greatest love is God and his wife, Cheri, who at times plays the role of not only lover but counselor, friend, advisor, and a savior of sorts. There are very few things that he cannot do well when he puts his mind to it, except easily forgive someone who has deceived, betrayed him, or anger him to no end.

A pregnant, clinical psychologist in her third trimester. She is a witty, intelligent, southern woman, and a force not to be reckoned with. She will stand by her husband’s side at all costs. As her husband is devoted to her, she is indebted and devoted to him. Once a waitress, she worked and helped her husband, J.E. to go to and finish college, who after finishing college worked and helped her to go and finish her undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. Like her husband, she has a low tolerance for dishonesty or deception. Her greatest fear is to hold back her husband from being the man that she knows he is destined to be.
