Theater Arts Teacher & Set Designer San Francisco Waldorf School

This is a part-time, hourly position; Start Date: October 2021; Set Designer: Spring 2022

San Francisco Waldorf High School seeks a Theater Arts Teacher to teach 10th grade Stagecraft and a Set Designer for its Spring 2022 production.

Approximate Dates: These Theater Arts blocks take place three times during the academic school year – October, Mid-January, and May. Exact schedule is to be determined.

Lessons are twice per week. Each block has 9-10 lessons: approximately 12 students per block.

Summary and Qualifications

The ideal candidate has high school teaching experience as well as experience working in theaters on technical aspects, specifically set design and construction. The course begins with the reading of a selected play, followed by working on various aspects of set design including building a model, designing, and building original props, various lighting exercises etc. The school has a performance space and a lighting board which are available for use in the class The ideal candidate is also responsible for the build of the Spring production, with help from students and parents (see separate description below).

Duties

● Preparation for classes, including supervising student clean-up of the classroom as necessary

● Ongoing evaluation of student progress

● Discipline during class.

● Prepare a syllabus by the second week of classes

● Taking daily attendance and

● Provide a narrative evaluation and grade for each student at the end of the block. The narrative evaluations and grades are to be submitted online, according to the schedule provided by the registrar.

● Submit expenses according to the purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Attach all receipts to a check request form and submit to the high school Arts Coordinator before turning it into the business office for reimbursement. Check request forms are available in the high school office.

Compensation

This is a non-exempt, hourly position. Benefits include those required by San Francisco.

SET DESIGNER

Ideally, the Theater Arts Teacher will also take on our Spring Production Set Design:

The Set Designer is responsible for both the design and the build of the set for the Spring production. While there is typically a healthy amount of parent volunteers, and mandatory student actor help, the Set Designer is ultimately responsible for the final product. The Set Designer needs to have their own tools, as the school does not provide them and is responsible for purchasing any necessary supplies, including paint, fabric, wood, etc. There is an outdoor patio on campus that is available to build on and storage space on campus as well.

In addition, the Set Designer helps with and supervises load in and load out, as well as makes arrangements for any necessary transportation of set pieces to and from theater (if using a rental space). The Set Designer is responsible for setting the work dates and schedule for the load in and load out, in collaboration with the director. The Set Designer may also be asked to accompany director for set piece rental (i.e., furniture and larger pieces not being built) and return.

This Set Designer is paid a flat rate of $3000 at the end of the production run.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

● Be able to occasionally lift to 30 lbs.

● Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including heat and cold

● Regularly sitting or standing 4-8 hours
